Simple hot and sour soup recipe

Okay, so it won’t taste at all like the one you get at your favourite Chinese restaurant. I took the recipe and simply skipped over the ingredients I didn’t already have, not to mention I tend to modify recipes to bring out their simplicity. This is a simple soup, however, that is filled with warm spice and will send a pleasant sizzle down your throat, all the way to your toes!

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cube vegetable stock
  • 3/4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/4 tsp pepper (Add less if you don’t want the spice! Personally, I love how it adds a kick.)
  • 1/3 tsp hot sauce (I used Tabasco sauce.)
  • 3/4 tsp vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic (sometimes I leave this out completely)
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped (my favourite part)
  • 2 tbsp chili oil (I used sesame oil…do you see what I mean?)
  • Optional: add 3/4 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced; 1/3 can water chestnuts


  1. Boil water, then add vegetable cube and help it to dissolve.
  2. Add all ingredients, except for the green onions and oil.
  3. Let simmer for 10 minutes (20, if you’re adding the mushrooms and/or water chestnuts).
  4. Add the green onions, simmer for 5 minutes. Then add the chili oil, and stir.
  5. Serve piping hot!

Serves 4 with room for seconds.
